Presentation

The green cross is a good example of conservation of religious heritage of the commune of Cheix-en-Retz..
This cross is located at a crossroads, near the road to Paimboeuf, 1.5 km from the village of Cheix, at a place where Abbé David mentions stations during the processions of Saint Mark's Day and Rogations.

Named the "Green Cross" because of the colour chosen for the wood of the cross, painted green, it was built in honour of Saint-Martin.

It was blessed in 1887 and rebuilt in its current form in 1898, with :
  • its square base in rubble stone masonry,
  • its chamfered cross with flowers,
  • its cast iron Christ,
  • cast iron titulus (inscription).

The Saint Martin cross was damaged during a storm in December 1979. It was renovated with a new pine cross and repairs to the cast-iron Christ.
It was blessed again on Easter Day 1981.

The base bears the inscription: "To the glory of Our Lady of Jesus Christ and in honour of St Martin" and the date.
