Presentation

The circuit "Rural landscape along the water" allows you to walk along the Canal de Haute-Perche from the old port to Clion-sur-Mer.
Haute-Perche is a small coastal river which runs in a tectonic notch forming a ria, i.e. a river valley conquered by the ocean at rising tide.
Several locks prevent the sea from flooding the bed of the Haute-Perche canal.
This ancient waterway measures 12 km and has its source in Arthon-en-Retz, in the commune of Chaumes-en-Retz. It is called a "canal" because, in the 18th century, man made it large enough to facilitate the passage of boats.
Since the Middle Ages and until the end of the XIXth century, goods such as cereals, tiles and terracotta from the country, wine or wood were transported through it.
