It is probably the only church in the Pays de Retz where you can admire a real carillon with a mechanism from 1857. The bells can ring the full octave, so it is possible to play "Ave Maria" and "Il est né le Divin Enfant".
The church of Saint-Pierre du Clion comes to us from the Middle Ages, from the XIVth century, or even from the XIIIth century, by its high square tower, massive and its oriental wall, solidary of the tower.
This tower is a bell tower-porch: bell tower with the bell chamber on the top level, porch on the ground level, access to the church.
This bell tower-porch was probably used as a watchtower towards the river Haute-Perche.
The church was remodeled in the 17th century and in the 19th century.
It is the only 17th century church in the Pays de Retz.
The sober architecture of the building bears witness to the Louis XIII style.
Superfluous decorations are banished. The stone remains visible and little sculpted.
This church dates from the time of the Catholic Counter-Reformation which encouraged the implementation of a mannerist or baroque interior decoration. After the revolution, the church fell into ruin. A first restoration took place around 1825.
From 1837, a complete renovation was carried out. The most important works started in 1857. On this occasion, the famous carillon was acquired. The church of Le Clion, by its simplicity and its uniqueness, is to be seen and protected.
