The standind stones of Platennes

Presentation

This megalithic place, also called the "three stones of the Crotrie" is composed by an alignment of 3 inverted menhirs with a respective height of about 4 meters.
There are twelve blocks of stone on this site, located between la Tendonnerie and la Crotrie, which can be likened to recumbent menhirs. These are divided between a first alignment of three main sandstone stones and, some twenty metres to the east, the remains of a second alignment.

The 3 main menhirs are thought to be the remains of a megalithic monument, probably a covered walkway.
  • The first menhir is 3.30 m long, 3.65 m wide and 1.35 m thick.
  • The middle one is 5.10 m long by 2.20 m wide, and 0.55 m thick. This menhir was blown down by a storm in the early 19th century. As it fell, it shattered a block of sandstone on which it rests.
  • The third is 4.40 m long by 1.70 m wide and 0.55 m thick.
The site was listed as a historic monument by decree on 2 May 1989.

A local saying goes: "Between the three stones, as a capon flies, a treasure is hidden...".
