Belle-Île-en-Mer

  • Belle Ile en Mer visits around Pornic islands Morbihan

Presentation

Treat yourself to the open sea with Belle-Île-en-Mer, the ‘Well-Named’! Although you have to travel a little further to Morbihan to board (departures from Quiberon all year round), during the season there are departures from ports in the north of the Loire-Atlantique department, from La Turballe and Le Croisic, to Belle-Île-en-Mer.
The largest of the Breton islands, Belle-Île lives up to its name perfectly.
Everything here is larger than life: from the vertiginous cliffs of the Côte Sauvage to the green valleys hiding pastel-coloured villages.
It is a land of artists and legends, located at the entrance to the Gulf of Morbihan, offering a feeling of absolute freedom.
It is a wonderful suggestion for a day trip or two-day excursion to enjoy a monumental experience.

‘Belle-Ile’, aptly named:
  • in the bright yet wet skies,
  • in the changing colours of the ocean,
  • in the intimate and wild atmosphere of the island landscapes,
  • in the charm of the welcoming valleys and paths...

... it promises a maritime foray into a fortress of beauty in the middle of the ocean.

Three good reasons to discover Belle-Île:
  1. The spectacular rock formations at Pointe des Poulains: This is one of Brittany's most iconic sites. Between the majestic lighthouse and the villa of the famous tragedienne Sarah Bernhardt, the landscape is exceptionally powerful. At high tide, the waves crash against the granite rocks, creating a natural scene that you will never tire of.
  2. The colourful charm of Sauzon and Le Palais: As soon as you arrive at the port, the tone is set. The brightly painted facades of the houses contrast with the deep blue of the Atlantic. Stroll along the quays of Sauzon at sunset or explore the imposing Vauban Citadel overlooking the port of Le Palais for a fascinating dive into the island's military history.
  3. A wild coastline that feels like the end of the world: The famous GR®340 long-distance hiking trail, which circles the island, is a wonder for hikers. Treat yourself to an enchanting break along the 85 km of marked coastal paths (with a 2,800 m elevation gain) running along the Atlantic coastline. The ocean stretching as far as the eye can see, unspoilt nature, protected species... Don't miss the Aiguilles de Port-Coton, the jagged rocks immortalised by the painter Claude Monet. The sight of white foam bubbling at the foot of these stone sentinels is simply mesmerising.

 Expert advice:
  • Head for Belle-Île-en-Mer, Houat and Hoëdic with Navix, a ferry company with nine departure ports. In July and August, take advantage of direct departures from Le Croisic and La Turballe (located one hour from Pornic) to reach these three gems of southern Brittany. Information and bookings are available from the seven Destination Pornic Tourist Offices
  • Belle-Île is huge (85 km²)! To make the most of a day trip, we recommend hiring a small electric car or scooter when you arrive at the port so you can easily get around the different natural sites.
