The
Calvary of the upper town
,
"Calvaire de la Douve",
is located in the highest point of the city of Pornic, on the site of
the old watchtower of the medieval city walls.
It is the highest point of the city : you can dominate the whole city from this place with a view that extends over the sea and the countryside.
It was in 1679, that was decided the construction of a calvary in the center of Pornic. The inhabitants and their rector undertook the construction of a platform with, in part, the materials found on site, from the old fortifications of the Upper Town. The ground was raised several meters. The monument ends with a rounded plateau surrounded by supporting walls, in the center of which a wooden cross, the Mission Cross, was planted on Corpus Christi in May 1680.
Over time, the masses of earth surrounding the Calvary collapsed, and the mound on which it was built was completely rebuilt and consolidated in 1748 after a mission that took place at that time. The old cross raised on the calvary was replaced and a statue of the Virgin and the Child Jesus was placed in a niche at the feet of the cross, which has now disappeared.
The history of the calvary is discussed with a guide as part of one of the guided walking tours offered by the Intercommunal Tourist Office entitled "
RUES ET CHEMINS
".
