Between nature and river: the tranquillity of the Acheneau

The commune flourishes in a green setting, bordered by the Acheneau river, which winds its way between marshes, reed beds and farmland.

A true link between Lake Grand-Lieu and the Loire, this tranquil waterway shapes the landscape and creates a bucolic atmosphere, conducive to relaxation and observing the flora and fauna.
The banks of the Acheneau invite you to stroll and wander in the shade of the poplar trees along the water's edge.

The gentle lapping of the water mingles with the rustling of the reeds, creating a soothing melody that invites serenity and contemplation.
The sun's reflections in the water, the discreet flight of a kingfisher and the fluttering of dragonflies add to the magic of the place.
Imagine a morning fishing trip, lulled by the gentle breeze.
Here, time seems to stand still.

A rich and remarkable heritage

Cheix-en-Retz is home to several heritage sites that tell its story.
  • The Saint-Martin Church stands elegantly, bearing witness to local history.
Rebuilt in the 19th century in the Neo-Romanesque style using stones from the original building, it stands out for its unusual bell tower, a real landmark in the landscape.
Inside, thanks to the colourful stained-glass windows, the diffused light creates a peaceful atmosphere, offering a subtle balance between tradition and modernity.
A place steeped in spirituality, perfect for continuing your immersion in the heritage of Cheix-en-Retz.

  • A little further on, the Buzon Bridge, an iconic 18th-century engineering structure, connects the commune of Cheix to that of Rouans.
This stone bridge, listed as a Historic Monument, bears witness to the strategic role of the commune in the past, particularly for river transport and trade between the Loire and the south of the Pays de Retz.

... The mysterious Trembling Stone

Among the local curiosities, the iconic Trembling Stone attracts attention.
It is an imposing rock in balance, whose surface, marked by time, fascinates as much as it intrigues.
According to legend, the stone trembles under the foot of those who know how to stand in the right place...
Will you be able to take up the challenge and feel its unique energy ?

Three stories surround this stone :
  • a mystical symbol that oscillates according to a precise balance
  • The evangelist Saint Martin de Vertou is said to have left his footprint there while preaching in the 6th century
  • finally, some say that he turned the inhabitants of Herbauges, who were reluctant to convert to Christianity, into stone. This stone is said to be one of them.
But these are only legends...

It leads to a shaded picnic area equipped with tables, ideal for a contemplative break.

Along the route, the area is popular with birdwatchers and photography enthusiasts: herons, ibises, ducks   and numerous wild flowers  brighten up the landscape depending on the season.
