Rendezvous for some delicious oyster fishing at La Bernerie en Retz.
The main beach at La Bernerie is not only famous for swimming and water sports, it's also famous for oyster and clam fishing.

Access is very easy, with car parks right next door. One is near the town hall and the other near the chemist's.

Obviously, a place like this is quickly passed on from fisherman to fisherman. So you're rarely alone on the foreshore, especially at high tide, and it can get a bit crowded some days!
But if you want to take the whole family there without too much trouble and discover the little creatures, it's the ideal place.

The resource is delicious but fragile, especially the clam. If we want this practice to continue and remain free, let's all be reasonable!

There's no need to travel miles, oysters are easy to collect and they're beautiful all year round. Clams are harvested mainly from late May to September. 
Here are a few good practices:
  • find out about the weather, any prohibitions, tide times and tidal range (call the tourist office)
  • make sure you have the right tools (clam digging knife, clam digger, etc.)
  • Equip yourself (boots, clothing adapted to the weather conditions)
  • learn the right techniques and only harvest what you will eat during the day
  • don't overestimate your sporting abilities; remember that if you go far on foot, you'll have to come back carrying your catch as well.
