Introduction to the contents of the brochure produced jointly by the ‘Heritage Group’ of the Raymond Devos Library and the Society of Historians of the Pays de Retz: "The village of Les Moutiers is over 1,500 years old! The Gauls and then the Gallo-Romans settled on the heights of Prigny, creating a port below. This gave them control over the entrance to the Gulf of Machecoul (now the Breton marshes). As the sea receded due to silting, the village developed from the Merovingian period onwards towards the hamlet of Les Sables, then to the current centre of Les Moutiers. In the 11th century, a castle was built on the heights of Prigny. From that time onwards, the current centre of Les Moutiers flourished under the impetus of the monasteries that gave their name to the commune (Moustiers meaning monasteries).
