Located in Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef, L'Écrin de la Belle Étoile invites you to an unforgettable encounter with animals that are as gentle as they are intriguing: llamas, alpacas and a camel. This small farm, created by Aurélie Chaintreau, is the only one of its kind in Loire-Atlantique and offers an authentic and educational experience.
A passion born from an encounter with Zorro, a llama About fifteen years ago, while working for a horse trader, Aurélie met a llama for the first time. Captivated by the proud appearance of this animal, she decided to take him in. Zorro, as she named him, became her very first companion. Sadly, after a long life of 36 years, he passed away. Today, it is Ohm, an energetic breeding male, who watches over the herd. “He lets the females give birth and he protects his herd. Most breeders do not leave the male with the females in order to control mating. I let him stay; he is happier that way,” Aurélie explains tenderly.
From eco-grazing to wool Over the years, L’Écrin de la Belle Étoile has grown. Today, 30 llamas, 22 alpacas and one camel share the pastures. Llamas and alpacas are not only beautiful creatures; they are also excellent eco-grazers. Their padded feet protect fragile soils and they love brambles and thorny plants. “They create ‘rivers’ of droppings, which makes land maintenance easier,” the breeder points out. Aurélie also sells her animals, mainly males, for land maintenance or for educational farms.
Alpaca wool, which is finer and more abundant than llama wool, is sent to a spinning mill to be turned into balls of yarn. Aurélie’s mother knits socks, hats, neck warmers and mittens with this wool. It is a way of valuing the work of my animals.
An educational journey to the land of alpacas and llamas Passionate about these camelids, Aurélie and Céline (her sister) will share their knowledge and enthusiasm with you during guided tours. You will learn more about their lifestyle, their diet and their role in the ecosystem. Younger visitors will be able to pet these peaceful bundles of affection and ask all their questions.
Activities for children L'Écrin de la Belle Étoile also offers fun and educational activities for children. They can take part in brushing workshops, food preparation or even creating objects made from wool. These activities encourage the development of fine motor skills, patience and respect for animals.
