The grandes Perrières quarry
is a former limestone extraction site. It is no longer in use, and nature is slowly reclaiming its rights.
This
exceptional natural heritage
site covers 22 hectares and is made up of wooded areas, lakes, ponds, lawns, meadows and fallow land.
The site has an
interesting diversity of flora and fauna
, with a good number of heritage species.
A little background information:
- The site was used in the 1960s to produce fill, and was then partially transformed into a leisure area in the 1970s, particularly for fishing and canoeing.
- In the 1980s, the area was nicknamed "Arthon-Plage" by local residents. The old quarry was a squat for brave bathers, attracted by the clear water. Of course, it was totally illegal and very dangerous!
- Exploitation of the quarry was definitively stopped at the same time.
- In 2017, the Corcoué-sur-Logne CPIE carried out an exhaustive inventory of the flora and fauna present on the site, at the request of the town council. The ecological interest of the site became apparent, with numerous species of dragonfly, amphibians and rare flowers such as wild orchids and liparocarpo sedge, a plant listed as protected in the region. The town council and local associations are currently looking at ways of enhancing the site in keeping with its environment and local residents.
How can you discover this original site?
- Access to the site is now authorised for walks, and reserved for pedestrians only.
- An explanatory board showing the site map is located at the main entrance, just beside the car park.
- You can then enter the site and take your time to discover and observe the various ponds and pools that make it up, while respecting the flora and fauna that thrive there.
- All you need to do is put on a good pair of shoes and follow the little path around.
Practical information :
To get there:
- Coming from Arthon (Chaumes-en-Retz) take the direction La Sicaudais, route de la Sicaudais, and just after the bridge take the path on your right. You can park here. The quarry is about 600m along a footpath.
- From the Rue du Passage de la Haie, turn right onto the track after the calvary. You can park at the end of the path. The quarry is about 200m away on foot along a footpath.
On site:
- Free parking is available.
- Access is free all year round.
- Motorised vehicles and swimming are not permitted.
To extend your walk and discover the site, you can also take the hiking trail that passes at the foot of the site:
le circuit d'Arthon à la Sicaudais
and also discover the commune of
Chaumes-en-Retz
.
