The
Passage du Rocher
in Pornic is
a link between the quayside and the historic town
, using both stairs and a lift. It is located on the site of the old fire station.
Located in
the heart of Pornic
, the Passage du Rocher links the lower town (rue de la Marine) to the upper town (rue du Maréchal Foch).
This project to create a pedestrian link between the port area and the historic town was initiated by the local authority and completed in 2022/2023.
The site takes its name from the rocky spur on which it is built.
The Passage du Rocher symbolises the link between history and modernity. It offers residents and visitors an attractive public space, with a
landscaped garden
redesigned as landings.
4 good reasons to visit :
🛳️
An architectural hyphen
The new Passage du Rocher is an architectural success story that elegantly blends ancient heritage with modernity.
The refurbishment of the former fire station, a heritage building with remarkable 1930s architecture, has given the complex its "liner style".
The ashlar façade blends in perfectly with the houses in the historic district, while the large picture windows and metal walkways add a modern touch.
This "ocean liner" architectural design favours mainly modern symmetrical geometric shapes. Sobriety is the order of the day.
Long horizontal lines contrast with rounded surfaces and corners, inspired by the transatlantic cruise liners that were very much in vogue at the time.
The architectural design by Pornic architect Sandra Troffigué gives the Passage du Rocher the appearance of a white boat deck.
A number of features are inspired by this type of architecture, which was very popular in the 1930s:
the flat roof
the footbridges
the terrace and balconies with railings, designed like the gangways on the decks of ocean liners
handrails
railings
the bay windows
or the showroom window.
🔎
A place of entertainment and discovery
The Passage du Rocher is home to an exhibition centre housed in Pornic's historic and emblematic former fire station.
This building has been transformed into a very bright 92 m² exhibition room.
The space is dedicated to cultural events and to showcasing the local heritage.
Temporary art exhibitions are held here, as well as a summer book fair and a winter book fair.
This meeting place also hosts the Festival 22 v'la le polar on its terrace in August, during which authors hold book signings on the esplanade.
🤩 A friendly public space accessible to all, with a breathtaking view of the city
The Passage du Rocher offers pedestrians a safe and pleasant path between the quay and the upper town.
A lift provides easy access to the top floor of the building, and its terrace, for those unable to climb the stairs, particularly people with reduced mobility, and to enjoy the panoramic terrace.
Take advantage of this superb 360° panoramic view of its surroundings to observe :
the Gourmalon district, with its flour mill and seaside villas on the other side of the harbour,
the roofs of the houses in the lower town,
the entrance to the Pornic ria,
the Château de Pornic,
the church of Saint-Gilles
and the former Montplaisir estate, now a hospital, with its Chapel of the Hospital.
🛍️ A place to shop
This contemporary architecture is home to a new shopping area with a number of shops on the second and third levels.
You can discover the products of several shops such as :
L'Îlot Gourmand, a delicatessen 🧀
Le Carrousel du Jeu, for fans of board games 🧩
as well as a gourmet break at the Sencha Café tea room ☕️
The little extras:
Take advantage of your exploration to visit an exhibition at Chapelle de l'Hôpital.
The Passage du Rocher is a real invitation to discover the liner style... An incentive to take a closer look at transatlantic shipbuilding. Why not extend your immersion: Embark on an unforgettable transatlantic adventure at Escal'Atlantic, exploring the legendary liners of Saint-Nazaire!
