Presentation

The seaside heritage develops from the late 19th century until the 1930's. Pornic retains many villas representative of this eclectic architect.
Both on the left bank of the ria de Pornic, in the district of Gourmalon, and on the coast extending from the castle to the town of Sainte-Marie, the seaside resort is adorned with beautiful houses witnessing this period.

The architecture of these "villas" or "cottages" is characterized by a heterogeneous "seaside" style, the houses (exotic, oriental, neo-Moorish...) concentrating a multitude of influences due to the vogue for romanticism and travelogues.
The facade reflects at best the wealth and aspirations of the owner, translating above all his personal tastes.
With the seaside villas, a new aesthetic is defined, resolutely turned towards picturesque effects.

Exoticism was a fertile source of inspiration both in the appearance of new architectural elements (the veranda, of Indian origin), and in the style used in certain decorative elements (the mantling, the observation kiosk built at the edge of the park...).

The first villas built along this coastline date from the years 1860-1890, when sea bathing became fashionable, which corresponds to the beginning of tourism.

The owners, generally city dwellers, wishing to return to nature, built their houses in the middle of a green setting.
The plantation of holm oaks on this site, former garenne of the lords of Rais constituted of moors of gorse and broom, allows to be sheltered from the winds.

The history of Gourmalon and its seaside villas is discussed with a guide as part of one of the guided walking tours offered by the Office of Tourism Intercommunal entitled "Cité balnéaire".

To deepen the subject of this patrimony pornicais, the site of Daniel SIcard dedicated to the seaside heritage of Pornic.
