The ‘rural heritage of Le Clion-sur-Mer’ trail is a 25km cycle route through the architectural and landscape heritage of Le Clion-sur-Mer.
Le Clion-sur-Mer is a rural region with a rich architectural heritage.
Under the Ancien Régime (1589-1789), the sharing of uncultivated land, known as ‘commun’, was vital. These ‘communs’, which date back to ancient Breton customs, enabled villagers to use the land collectively for activities such as grazing, crop storage and major agricultural works.
In this context, a ‘borderie’ was a small farm generally run by an owner or small farmer, while a ‘métairie’ was a larger farm run by a farmer. Admittedly, the right to farm these communal lands disappeared with the French Revolution, but their legacy lives on in the organisation and agricultural structures such as the borderies and métairies that marked Le Clion-sur-Mer under the Ancien Régime.
