From flint   to sea bathing    : the history of Sainte-Marie-sur-Mer
 
  •   A thousand years of history: Since prehistoric times, Sainte-Marie-sur-Mer has been a popular place to settle. Archaeological remains bear witness to continuous human occupation of the area.
  •   The beginnings of a market town: The foundation of an abbey by the canons of Saint-Augustin in the 12th century laid the foundations for the present-day market town.
  •   The seaside boom: Very small and closely linked to the monastic establishment, the town only really developed in the 19th century with the advent of the sea bathing craze.
