Presentation

The present neo-gothic church dates from the end of the 19th century. It was probably the monks of Saint-Philbert de Noirmoutier who first evangelized the site of Sainte-Marie, as well as the entire coast of the Pays de Retz. The old abbey was completely demolished in the 17th century.
In spite of the numerous invasions until the 11th century, the priory remained and was erected as an abbey in the 12th century. The abbey of Sainte-Marie reached its peak in the 14th century. At that time, it spread over 13 priories including Le Clion, Pornic, Bourgneuf... But following multiple conflicts and the progressive abandonment of the place by the monks, the abbey was demolished in the 17th century. The conventual buildings occupied the current parish of Sainte-Marie and the gardens. Remains of the cloister and pieces of capitals could still be seen there at the beginning of the 20th century.

However, there are still two works of art from the distant 14th century at Sainte-Marie, which every summer visitor should see at least once during his stay. They are both in the new neo-gothic church: the tombstone of Guillaume des Bretesches and the statue of Notre-Dame de Tabernacle.
