Presentation

On the banks of the Acheneau river, below the small village of Cheix-en-Retz, while taking a short stroll through the countryside, you come across a large boulder balanced on the ground...
What is it? Where does it come from? Have aliens come to play a joke on us? Could it be Asterix and his obelisks? The question is still being asked today... This stone speaks to us... in fact it trembles, which is why it's called The Trembling Stone... And what if it really could talk to us, tell us about its past? So it's up to you to listen, who knows? Maybe you'll discover its secret? Here are 7 good reasons to discover the legend of La Pierre Tremblante: - The site is very pleasant, on the banks of the Acheneau river. In summer, it's even shaded! - For the more mystical, discover this place in autumn or winter, when the morning mists rise from the river water and give a special atmosphere to the surrounding marshland... - In spring, the flora awakens, the buds open and it's time to come and pick a pretty bouquet of wild flowers, - Whatever the season, it's the perfect place for a lovely walk along the hiking trail of the same name: La Pierre Tremblante; a signposted route of around 11km. - This is an ideal spot for a snack or picnic, with a number of tables along the river. - For fishing enthusiasts, the Acheneau river offers some great fishing; more information HERE.

 - From the shore, you can take your own boat (rowing boat, canoe or paddle) upstream for a lovely trip to the village of Messan in Rouans or downstream to Port-Saint-Père. A little background information: The Cheix-en-Retz area was already inhabited in prehistoric times. People became sedentary and built a village on the banks of the Tenu. The first burials appeared during the Middle Palaeothic period. They are linked to Neanderthal man. In the Neolithic period, burial practices developed. At this time, Homo Sapiens buried their dead in burial chambers known as megaliths. The Pierre Tremblante, possibly the remains of a megalith, now lies on the banks of the Acheneau. Did you say "legend"? There's not just one, but three! - The first tradition has it that it trembles when you climb to a particular spot, hence its name, the trembling stone. - A second legend has it that Saint-Martin de Vertou, a 6th-century evangelist, climbed the stone to preach. Carried away by his faith, he is said to have carved the imprint of his right foot into the rock. Since then, it has been known as the St Martin stone.
  - Finally, the third relates to the life of Saint-Martin. The inhabitants of Herbauges were reluctant to embrace Christianity. He had them swallowed up by Lake Grand Lieu. Some had followed the monk, but soon turned back to the pagan gods. Saint-Martin decided to turn them into stone. This stone would be one of them.

And now it's your turn to play: The Trembling Stone is balanced on several other rocks. Can you shake it?
