La Boutinardière beach
, located between Pornic and La Bernerie-en-Retz, is a large sandy cove where strange, gigantic rocks stand in the middle of countless fisheries.
It's a great place to go prawn fishing with the family or a group of keen anglers, and to discover the foreshore (an area uncovered at low tide). Don't forget to bring closed shoes or boots and a net!
The walk along this beach offers an incomparable panorama. The colourful orange-yellow cliffs contrast with the sky. One of the cliffs has a hole through it: the famous hell hole! When the wind blows through it, you can hear a frightening thud.
What's the story behind all those stones you can see on the foreshore at low tide?
At low tide, this walking site reveals small stones arranged in the shape of an inverted V, with the tip pointing out to sea. These are old fish locks! This fishing technique dates back to the Middle Ages, when fish were caught in stone traps built along the shoreline. The fishermen of the time would place a net at the end of the trap and when the tide went out, the fish would be caught!
The customs path winds above the cliff. From up there you can admire the fish locks and the many fisheries even better. This path takes you either towards Pornic or towards La Bernerie-en-Retz.
