Presentation

The development of mass tourism and swimmers in the 20th century on the coast, in 1908 led to the construction of a Chapel dedicated to Sainte-Anne ...
This chapel was enlarged six times to form the main church, made up of three naves in the shape of a cross, articulated on the lantern tower of the choir, it has a total of 1300 places.

The main architect of this achievement is Father Pierre Gicquel, chaplain from 1946 to 1959, then parish priest of Tharon from 1959 to 1963. There are two "Christ on the Cross", one of which dates from the 14th century, which has the particularity of having nails in the wrists, as on the holy shroud of Turin, and the other from the 16th century. In the framework of the central nave, opposite the altar, the 14th century Christ on the cross has been partially restored: the arms have been redone, but the nails of the feet are original.

Behind, the high altar, on the wall, the great 16th century Christ is from the Spanish school. The Renaissance statue of Sainte-Anne (17th century) comes from a destroyed church in Lower Brittany. The very ornate credenza is from the 18th century and comes from the former Cistercian abbey of Buzay.

We began to celebrate weddings and baptisms there shortly before 1939. The burials took place from 1942, when the Tharon cemetery was opened.

The chapel has two bell towers: a square lantern tower at the crossing of the transept, in the manner of the Touraine Romanesque abbey churches (or of the Saint-Sauveur de Redon abbey, built on the same model) and a slate spire above of the entrance, placed on the chamber of the bells whose section is halfway between the rectangle and the ellipse ...
