Presentation

From 1472, the Cordeliers monks having given up taking care of any hospital establishment, and this for more than a century and a half, the poor of the parish of Bourgneuf had no more help. It is to this situation that we owe the creation of the hospital in the 17th century.
In 1628, Pierre Bourgeois sieur de la Basse-cour, lawyer and royal notary, had the generous thought of making up for the shortcomings of the Cordeliers. Next to a house he had bought in the same street, he had two or three small rooms built to house the sick.

The hospital was born, but it was going to develop slowly. From 1699 to 1720, the estate had to expand by absorbing many surrounding houses, donations from generous parishioners.

The hospital buildings, as they were still in the 20th century, were built between 1708 and 1722.

The Chapel, placed in the center, is devoid of style, but there is an immense altarpiece dated 1722. At its top, a statue of Saint Laurent in polychrome wood from the 15th century, it comes from the chapel of a former priory.

During the revolution, the hospital was converted into a military hospital.

Widely altered since its construction, the current hospital and its buildings house a long-stay hospital (EHPAD), the historic part of which is limited to the Chapel, the bell tower of which can still be seen from the rue du pont Edelin.
