The Messan bridge

  • The Messan bridge

Presentation

The Messan-la-Chaussée bridge dates from 1713. It is still nicknamed the "Chaussée-Leray".
Chaussée le Rais", "Chaussée le Roy" or "Chaussée le Retz"... Its spelling has changed over time.

This causeway supported the old Roman road from Nantes to Saint-Père en Retz.
It is conceivable that this earthen embankment was used as a passageway for this road, which later became a Roman road.
It was also very useful for holding back floodwaters from the Grand-lieu lake, thus protecting the Buzay marshes.
