During the golden age of the town between the 17th and 18th centuries, a number of sailors, smugglers, poachers, wreck looters and other "outlaws" frequented the neighborhoods of the village of Bourgneuf; So the town was equipped with a local jail, a jail court, a sitting room to deliver justice, on site, there is also a pillory with its straitjacket (now missing).
