Presentation

The Portmain tree is no more!
"The Portmain tree attracted many photographers and painters who loved old trees.

This landmark for sailors and walkers along Pornic's coastal path was also a source of inspiration for artists, especially photographers, who loved its flag-like silhouette, shaped by the winds.

On the front line of the seafront, the Lambert cypress tree on Portmain beach has broken under the onslaught of the wind. It was unable to withstand the gusts of over 100 km/h that blew in on the night of 3 to 4 March 2019, during the Freya storm that battered the Côte de Jade. Although accustomed to the winds, the tree broke and, with it, an emblem for the people of Pornic.
Isolated on a cliff, it could be seen from a great distance, both from the sea and from the land.

In fact, it was a Lambert cypress that had become emblematic of our southern Loire and Brittany coasts. And yet it came from far away, from the coast of Southern California, from where it was imported in the mid-19th century!
Lambert de Portmain's famous cypress has stood up valiantly to all storms.
It was exposed to extreme conditions, in the front line on the seafront, subjected to the sea spray that sprayed salt on its scales and to the wind that tore off, one by one, all the branches that were not oriented in its direction.
This is how it came to take on its "flag" shape, the one that offers the least resistance to the storms!

Today, its trunk is split and its branch is on the ground. "The scene will remain as it is. There's no question of cutting it up into saplings, so it will be kept as it is.
An educational sign will be put up near the cypress. This will enable the town to communicate about bad weather, to explain that meteorological phenomena can have consequences and also to recall its history.
In the coming months, the same Lambert cypress will be planted next to the rot-proof trunk of the Portmain cypress.

Down below, there is a narrow beach, that of Portmain, and a small cove with... a fishery, of course!
