The
Grandes Perrières quarry
site is a former limestone extraction site. It is no longer in operation today, and nature is quietly reclaiming its rights.
An exceptional natural heritage site covering an area of 22 hectares, it consists of wooded areas, lakes, ponds, lawns, meadows and wasteland.
The site boasts an interesting diversity of flora and fauna, with a large number of heritage species.
A bit of history :
The site was used in the 1960s to produce fill material, then partially converted into a leisure area in the 1970s, particularly for fishing and canoeing. In the 1980s, the place was nicknamed ‘Arthon-Plage’ by the local residents. The old quarry was squatted in by brave swimmers, attracted by the crystal-clear water. Of course, this was completely illegal and very dangerous! The quarry ceased operations for good during this same period. In 2017, a comprehensive inventory of the flora and fauna present in the area was carried out by the Centre for Environmental Initiatives; CPIE, of Corcoué-sur-Logne at the request of the town council. The
ecological importance
of the site became apparent, as it is home to
many species of dragonflies, amphibians and rare flowers
such as
wild orchids and Carex liparocarpo
, a plant classified as protected in the region. The town hall and local associations are currently considering ways to better promote the site in relation to its environment and inhabitants.
A good reasons to discover the Grandes Perrières quarry site
Follow the trail around the site to discover the
different landscapes
; observe the
various pools and ponds
that make up the site, while respecting the
flora and faun
a that thrive there.
Pratical information :
An information board showing a map of the site is located at the main entrance, right next to the car park.
Access to the site is permitted for walking only and is reserved for pedestrians. (Swimming is prohibited.)
How to get there ?
Coming from Arthon (Chaumes-en-Retz), head towards La Sicaudais on Route de la Sicaudais, and just after the bridge, take the path on your right. You can park here. The quarry is about 600 metres away on foot via a hiking trail.
From Rue du Passage de la Haie, turn right onto the path after the calvary. You can park at the end of the path. The quarry is about 200 metres away on foot via a hiking trail.
To extend your walk, why not explore the village of
Chaumes-en-Retz
?
