"The social phenomenon of sea bathing in the nineteenth century has permanently shaped the French coastline. Pornic was a precursor site frequented by its first water-drinking vacationers who later became bathers. The "cottages" with their parks and gardens were established on the shores developed into places to walk. The landscape of the coastline was thus progressively urbanized with a rich architectural and vegetal heritage. A tourist economy has developed with casinos and hotel and sports facilities. The main stages of this history of Pornic between 1820 and 1939 will be presented with the help of numerous illustrations."
