Presentation

The name of the town comes from the Latin căsa which means "hut", thus evoking the modest size of the first town. However, the first mention is attested in a title of 1123 under the Latin name Chesiacum.

Later, many spellings followed one another: Cheix in 1287, Chayx in 1450, then Chayz in 1452. However, the Cheix spelling imposed itself the following century and until 1920, when the final name of Cheix- en-Retz is adopted.

Moreover, it can be said that the town changed its name during the revolutionary period, to temporarily call itself Rives-du-Tenu.
