Want to spend a timeless moment that feels like a waking dream? Guided by costumed hosts, you will discover Pornic Castle by torchlight or candlelight. A magical evening for the whole family.
Although privately owned, the castle, with its thousand-year-old foundations, is closely linked to Pornic.
Originally a simple keep built on a rocky outcrop in the mid-10th century, the Pornic castle, with its elegant turrets and slender keeps, bears no resemblance to the original rustic building. Dominating the entrance to the port, it is as much a remarkable building, listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments, as it is a landmark for sailors and the emblem of the town.
From 1250 onwards, the building, which had become a veritable fortified castle with keeps, high walls and a drawbridge, was the residence of the Lords of Rais.
Until the Revolution, the castle retained all its integrity as a military fortress but with a more residential purpose. It was then left unoccupied and gradually fell into disrepair. In the early 19th century, a certain Chauvet, known as Misère, even set about dismantling it without authorization, selling its stones for profit!
In 1899, thanks to Monsieur de Bourqueney, the great-grandfather of the current owner, and the Nantes architect François Bougoüin, the castle took on its current neo-Gothic appearance, which nothing and no one would ever change again.
