Presentation

Lecture: ‘Cultivated Plants and Domestic Animals: What Journeys Have They Undertaken?’ by the Society of Friends of the Musée de l’Homme – Oceanic Branch

   On the programme

Delve into the fascinating history of what ends up on our plates every day! Hosted by Serge Bahuchet, Professor Emeritus of Ethnobiology at the National Museum of Natural History, this lecture offers a chronological overview of the main food plants and domesticated animals, from their original centres of domestication (the Near East, the Far East, Africa, the Americas and Oceania) to their current distribution.

Tracing the routes of their spread across the globe, the speaker will highlight some surprising and lesser-known examples:

  • Asian millets established in Europe
  • Maize and chillies from the Americas travelling to the Old World
  • Bananas from Oceania and cassava from the Americas adopted in Africa
  • Horses and cattle introduced to the Americas
  • The American turkey’s arrival in Europe

A unique opportunity to understand the close links between human societies and their natural environment, alongside a leading specialist in agrobiodiversity and former director of collections at the Muséum.
