The transhumance of the sheep flock: an environmental initiative led by the Loire-Atlantique Department and its partners

   What’s on

On Wednesday 7 October 2026, come and witness a magnificent transhumance event in Pornic! Nearly 350 sheep from the Landes de Retz pastoral association will pass through the town on their way to the coastal grazing lands of Préfailles.

  • The early morning departure: the event will kick off at 9.00 am in Pornic. The flock will make its way through several streets and neighbourhoods in the town (including La Joselière, Rue de la Source, the 8 May Bridge and Rue de la Marine) before reaching a highlight at the Ria.
  • The regrouping at the Ria: at around 10.30 am, the two herds will be brought together at the Ria before continuing their journey towards the coast. This is a special opportunity to observe the animals, supervised by around thirty professionals and accompanied by an emergency livestock trailer for any tired animals.
  • An ecological and heritage initiative: this transhumance forms part of the eco-responsible management of the Port-aux-Goths–Portmain Sensitive Natural Site, led by the Loire-Atlantique Department in partnership with the Conservatoire du littoral, the municipalities of Pornic and Préfailles, and the Landes de Retz pastoral association. This exceptionally rich site is home to 70 species of birds, 224 plant species, 124 species of insects and 23 types of natural habitat.
  • Discovering sheepdogs (patous): throughout the trail, you will be able to watch the shepherds and their sheepdogs at work. Born on the farm and integrated into the flock from a very young age, these dogs watch over the sheep day and night. Visitors are invited to learn about their vital role in deterring predators and to adopt the correct behaviour when approaching them to ensure everyone’s safety.
