Presentation

A protected natural area classified as a Natura 2000 site, the marsh covers the southern half of the municipality of Villeneuve-en-Retz.

Covering a total area of approximately 45,000 hectares, it now stretches from Port du Collet to Moutiers-en-Retz, passing through the villages of Bourgneuf, Saint Cyr and Fresnay, and further south to the Monts forest.

  • To walk and cycle there in all seasons : several marked hiking trails allow you to explore it
  • To observe numerous birds ; the Eurasian spoonbill, the little egret, the grey heron, swans, the lapwing, the black-winged stilt, the black-headed gull, the elegant avocet, the brown and silver gull, the kestrel, the reed bunting... on your own or on a guided tour
  • To meet the friendly wildlife : cows, horses, Poitou donkeys, Ouessant sheep, nutria, eels, frogs.
  • To experience its unique flora and discover different species of plants typical of this gentle, salty wetland environment: glasswort, soda, black mustard, tamarisk, bulrush, rush, and sea purslane.
  • To discover a small amount of vernacular heritage that is still visible: bourrines (stone huts), stone bridges, fisheries, fountains and locks.
  • The colours change with each season from February to November.
