The Vue marsh : a showcase of biodiversity at the heart of Destination Pornic

Discovering Vue means first and foremost marvelling at its landscapes and plunging into the heart of a remarkable natural area: the Vue marsh.
Situated below the Canal Maritime de la Basse-Loire, also known as the Canal de la Martinière, it covers some 450 hectares. This Natura 2000 listed marshland is a haven of peace, with wet meadows, winding canals and moats that still irrigate the land using an ingenious system of sluice gates, adapted to the seasons and agricultural needs.
Formerly known as the Buzay meadows, this fertile land extends as far as the Acheneau marshes, with direct links to the neighbouring communes of Rouans and Cheix-en-Retz, illustrating the ecological richness of the whole Destination Pornic area.
This flat landscape, criss-crossed by inlets of freshwater, is ideal for a walk or cycle ride. As you stroll along, marvel at the exceptional biodiversity: herons, ducks, dragonflies...

🔎 3 good reasons to discover the Vue marshes :

  • An unspoilt natural setting, perfect for a peaceful getaway with family or friends,
  • Immerse yourself in a living, fragile ecosystem, typical of wetlands in the Pays de Retz,

They come to nest in the marshes every year, and have become a living symbol of Vue's attachment to its environment and the importance of preserving wetlands for local biodiversity.

Keep your eyes peeled : their majestic silhouettes are often visible and clearly recognisable in full flight.
This aerial ballet fascinates young and old alike, and testifies to the ecological richness of the Destination Pornic area.

Vue, a land of history: the murus gallicus, the church of Sainte-Anne and the miraculous fountain

Vue is also an area deeply marked by history, and to discover Vue is to plunge into an ancient heritage that is surprisingly rich.

The murus gallicus

First of all, there is this remarkable vestige: the murus gallicus, a defensive rampart over 2,000 years old. It is a fascinating historical vestige that bears witness to the strategic importance of this site in ancient times, with foundations dating back to Gaul and later reinforced by the Romans using their own military construction techniques.
A strategic defensive role: this imposing structure was used to protect the town's population from outside attacks.
Traces still visible today: although partially destroyed, this historic site has left its mark on the Vue landscape, regularly brought to light by archaeological digs carried out in the Destination Pornic area.

The church of Sainte-Anne

In the heart of the village, the church of Sainte-Anne is a landmark with elegant neo-Romanesque architecture and a central role in the history of Vue.
Together with the famous fountain of the same name, they perpetuate a unique spiritual tradition.

The Sainte-Anne fountain

This fountain is said to be "miraculous".
Since the 7th century, the inhabitants of the Retz region have come here to pray, hoping to cure their ophthalmic diseases. Two miracles in the 17th century further enhanced the fountain's reputation. Every year, on the Sunday closest to 26 July, Saint Anne's Day, Vue revives its past as a major place of pilgrimage.
The procession, the masses, the funfairs and the popular dances - which kept the town alive until the 1960s - are all reminders of the intensity of this moment of popular fervour.

A living cultural heritage at the heart of Destination Pornic.

Destination Pornic's favourite: the oppidum, Vue's Gallic memory

One of Vue's hidden treasures is awe-inspiring for history buffs: the Gallic oppidum, unearthed during excavations in 2014.
This ancient fortified town, dated to between 150 and 50 BC and surrounded by the famous murus gallicus, demonstrates the strategic importance of Vue well before Roman times.
At that time, Vue was much more than just a village: it was a major landmark for navigators entering the Loire estuary.
Its dominant position at an altitude of 40 m and its river access made it a natural gateway to the heart of the Pays de Retz.

The oppidum comprised two fortified zones :
  • a 12-hectare inner enclosure, protected by a 1,250-metre wall,
  • a 25-hectare outer enclosure, 2 km long.
